My unspayed dog has a red nipple. Should I spay her before heat?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Toy Poodle | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 3 months old | 5.1 lbs

I just noticed my dog, she has one nipple in red colour. It is just a little bit bigger than the others. Her behavior is normal otherwise and she had not been spayed yet tho Im going to have her do it soon. She might also be nearing her heat. Why? And also is it better to spay before heat or after heat??

That nipple could be infected (mastitis) so first you need to resolve that before any surgical procedure. Mastitis is generally caused by an infection so appropriate antibiotics are required. It is best to spay at least three weeks after heat. Please do not hesitate to contact us again on the forum or by requesting a consultation if you have any more questions or to discuss it any further.

Yes, I am afraid, dogs can get mastitis and the signs you describe can indeed point to mastitis. I think it is a good idea to have it checked out on Monday so it can be treated before it turns into a purulent mastitis (with pus). Make sure Bonnie does not lick the nipple as she can contaminate it with bacteria that way and also aggravate inflammation.
