My dog has bone cancer, is sick, and won't take meds. Euthanasia?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 32.17 lbs

My dog was diagnosed with bone cancer two days ago he was anaesthetised for X-rays and was given pain meds. He really isn't himself and has just been sick and is refusing his pain medication. I don't know what to do. Should I take him be put it sleep now or in morning or has this happened because of the anaesthetic? I'm so lost.

Oh my, I'm so sorry to hear about Dodge's diagnosis. Bone cancer (most commonly osteosarcoma) is extremely painful and most cases metastasize (spread elsewhere in the body) by the time they are diagnosed. His lethargy could be a side effect of the anesthesia, but it could also simply be a sign of pain from his cancer - there is no way to differentiate between the two. Anytime an osteosarcoma is present, euthanasia is always an option due to the aggressive and painful nature of these tumors. Unless you are considering a limb amputation and chemotherapy, it sounds as though euthanasia may be warranted to ease any suffering that Dodge may be experiencing. I'm so sorry that you are all going through this.
