My dog barely ate today. Should I take her to the vet right away?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 1 year and 10 months old | 30 lbs

Nemmy usually snarfs her food immediately, but today she barely touched it, and when I put it directly in front of her she slowly took a few nibbles. Should I take her to the vet immediately or can it wait until tomorrow?

If Nemmy is acting normally without any vomiting or diarrhea, there is likely no reason for concern at this point. You can wait until tomorrow to see if she is willing to eat as ravenously as she normally does. However, if she is lethargic, or showing signs of vomiting or diarrhea, it may be worth a trip to the vet today to assure that nothing more serious is at play. You can try tempting her to eat with a bit of a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken and white rice. I hope that all goes well!

Oh no, poor pup! Given that she did eat today, I would keep an eye on her for tonight. Keep offering her food, mixing in some boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice to try to tempt her to eat. If she is still acting sluggish tomorrow, stops eating, or develops a fever, then I would take her into the vet.
