Why is my new dog aggressive towards my boyfriend when I'm home?

I got my dog three days ago and most the time he's a big ol sweetheart, however when I'm away in boyfriends with him he's fine but when we're both in the room he becomes aggressive and barks and growls and tries to bite him and jumps on him is there anything we can do to help and stop doing this they understand that my boyfriend is not trying to hurt me, we feel that he is protective over myself in the house.
