Dog paw lumps: Why is my dog licking and biting them until they bleed?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Border Collie | Female | 30 lbs

My dog has a few small tiny lumps on some of her paws which are also hard. She always licks her front two paws and she but one of the lumps so much that it is bleeding. My question is, is this normal for dogs? And how do I stop her from biting it next time? She is an border collie 14 year old female.

It's hard to see from the pictures, but if Lily is biting to the point of causing bleeding this is not normal. The bumps could be anything ranging from allergies, to fungal/yeast infections between the toes, to growths/tumors. It would be best to have the area looked at by your vet so the exact cause can be found. In the meantime, using an Elizabethan (cone) collar to prevent Lily from licking and chewing is best to stop further irritation or introduction of bacteria into the wound.
