Why is my Chihuahua straining with watery blood, no blood in stool?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | spayed | 12 years and 10 months old | 5 lbs

My Chihuahua has a little watery blood around her rectum when she is starting to go to the bathroom, but when she passes stool there is no blood in her stool, when she pottied earlier she was kinda having a little hard time going, and it looked like what you would think was a hemorrhoid..but she did go, I had her to the vet last week and they checked her anal sacks, expressed them, did a complete blood workup and said everything was fine...She eats fine, drinks, and acts fine otherwise .

Good that the full workup last week was normal. Isabella may be straining to pass hard stool, and I'd recommend adding a bit of fiber like pumpkin to her diet, or ask your vet for a stool softener. She may be straining so hard that she is causing bleeding in her little anus area, or her anal glands could have some bloody discharge. If she is eating and drinking and not acting painful this is a good sign that nothing major is going on. I like Royal Canin Fiber diet for these issues as a long-term diet.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Belle! Blood in the stool indicates inflammation in the colon. Possible causes are: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infections, she ate something gross outside upsetting her GI tract, pancreatitis, reaction or a new food/treat/table food or a food allergy/intolerance. There is no fast way to stop the blood expect time. I would feed her a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day until 2 normal stools. You can also start a probiotic like Purina Fortiflora. If she isn't improving in a few days she should be seen by your Vet for an exam and medications. I wish Belle the best!
