How to help my blind, deaf senior dog's anxiety and howling?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Female | spayed | 17 years and 2 months old | 5 lbs

Molly is 17yrs old and now blind and deaf, whenever anyone visits she constantly cries and paces until they go, she has done this for a few months now, also only the last few weeks she has started howling if I leave the home, this is never for long or often and is very distressing for both of us it's got to the point where I darent leave the house now, she just sleeps apart from when she needs basics e.g. food, water and toilet, I'm so concerned about her, breaks my heart to see her like this

Molly may benefit from some anti-anxiety medication at this stage, and pain medication if she is having arthritis or other medical issues. Take her in for a full workup and ask your vet for anti-anxiety meds like Lorazepam as this may help her feel less anxious when you are gone. There are things we can do medication-wise to really help her quality of life at this point.
