What canned food is safe for my cat's urinary and constipation issues?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 12 years and 11 months old | 27 lbs

My cat has been on Purina One Urinary tract Health dry good for 10 years which has kept his problem under control all these years. Recently he has been having trouble with constipation and I would like to try canned cat food with him. Which is a safe one for him to eat that will not cause a Urinary tract issue 28th the crystals again?

Since constipation issues are directed at increasing water content and fiber, I would recommend sticking with the canned Purina urinary food and then adding in fiber daily with 1-2 tsp of canned pumpkin or Metamucil. Also have him checked with your vet if there is ever a time he can't go at all because he may have a condition called megacolon (enlarged colon) which would require medicaiton to treat. You can also try Laxatone over the counter. Here is a website link with more information for you.http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&S=0&C=0&A=634 I hope your fur baby gets well soon.
