Cat's foot swollen after squirrel bite. What can I do without a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My cat caught a squirrel yesterday and I believe his foot was bitten or scratched. He bled on the pillow he was sleeping on, but appears to be acting normal at the moment, and is using that foot without difficulty even though it's a little puffed up. His foot isn't bleeding anymore, but he is still cleaning it from time to time. I don't have a lot of money to bring him to a vet, is there anything I can do at home for him? Thank you.

Hello. The best thing would to be to bring him to a vet but if that isn't an option then I would get a cone so he can't lick at it as his mouth will infect the wound. I would wash the foot well with warm water, and put the cone on. Don't put anything else on the foot. Keep him inside. If it doesn't heal up in a few days, or starts to look worse at all, or has a yellow/cream/green discharge then he will need to see a vet for antibiotics. Good luck with him!
