My dog is scared to sleep on the bed during storms. What can I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Female | spayed | 2 years and 6 months old | 63 lbs

My 2.5 year old lab suddenly became afraid of sleeping on our bed. I believe a windstorm may have started this. We have since moved to Florida and she has been sleeping on our bed for the last 2 weeks. Last night she started the behavior again (there were storms in the area). She will jump on the bed and immediately jump off. She slept in the living room last night but came in and woke me up a number of times during the night. I feel terrible as she seems genuinely fearful of something.

Awww, poor Willow! Sounds like she has noise phobia, a common enough affliction that we see in dogs and cats. This is usually something that is addressed with either medications, or items like the Thundershirt and Adaptil Collar. I like to advise owners to try the latter two options first prior to jumping to a medication, as chemicals should only be used when absolutely necessary. If neither of them seem to be successful in helping Willow, speak to your veterinarian about prescribing something to help with the anxiety. Drugs for this in dogs usually include alprazolam or trazodone.
