Dog ear cut during grooming: Is home treatment safe and effective?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Shepherd | Male | neutered | 9 years and 4 months old | 60 lbs

I was shaving my dog and cut through his eat like front and back half an inch in. I have no money to take him to a vet right now. I put liquid bandaid on it wrapped it in gauze keeping it flat, didn't make too tight but tight enough to have a little pressure and wrapped a cloth around his head to keep it flat . Is this enough to home treat it? I REALLY can't afford a vet visit..

I believe I answered your question earlier. It sounds like you have taken my advise so far. So yes, as long as there is pressure on the wound but not enough to cut off any circulation, you probably doing all you can. The liquid bandaid was a reasonable plan as well. Obviously nothing is going to be as good as manual closure of the wound, but if you can't go to the vet then I believe what you are doing is the next best thing. In addition to what you are doing, I would do bandage changes daily for the next few days at least, and apply some triple antibiotic ointment to the affected area. As long as the bleeding is stemmed, I think things are going to be OK. Toby just might not have as pretty an ear anymore! Sorry Toby's ear :-(.
