My cat's eye is swollen, red, and painful to touch. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Bombay | Male | unneutered | 9 months and 5 days old | 13 lbs

The skin around the top left part of my almost 1 year old cat is swollen. The skin is starting to turn red now. He's still acting like his normal self, but it hurts him if it's touched. There's also something caught up in his fur around the corner of his eye. It feels like a scab, but I can't tell with all the fur. Should I be concerned? Also, what can I do at home to help his eye get better soon?

From the picture it is evident that the eye lid is very swollen, underneath the dry discharge present on it. It is very important to have the eye checked over, as there could be something underneath the eye lid causing the swelling. It could also be that Sebastian has been involved in a cat fight, which could have caused an infection of the eye lid. A vet visit with targeted treatment will speed up his recovery but also prevent the condition from getting worse. We are not sure what is causing it, but with eye problems it is always better to be safer rather than sorry.
