My dog has a red spot on his mouth palate. Does he need a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | neutered | 1 year and 4 months old | 65 lbs

Our dog is 1 yr 6 months old, black labrador. Has always been healthy other than the occasional vomit from certain things he eats and diahhrea at times. He has a red spot on the back of his mouth pallet, i just noticed today and was wondering if it was cause for concern. We love our pup, and want to make sure we get him treatment if this is something that could get worse. Thank you!

It looks like Decoy most likely has developed an ulcer. The type of ulcer he has is something more commonly seen in cats, but can be seen in dogs on occasion. The typical treatment for it is steroids and antibiotics, which will have to be acquired through a veterinarian. While at the vet, they will also be able to examine it to make sure it is not a growth or mass of some sort. This would be extremely unusual in such a young dog so I wouldn't worry too much about it. The ulcers can be somewhat resistant and take a while to get rid of, but in the end they are usually something perfectly treatable.
