Why is my dog suddenly in his crate all the time? Is it normal?

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | unneutered | 72 lbs

Hi so I recently noticed mainly yesterday and today that my dog spends a lot of time in his crate. What could the reason be for him doing so ? Should I be worried that he suddenly started doing so ? He seems to play with me fine. He runs outside fine. But if I play with him inside after we're done he will go into his crate. Could it be that when he is bad I tell him he's gonna go in there ? Is there anything I should look for ? Is this normal ? Thank You

I think it's great that Rocky wants to hang out in his crate! This means that his crate is a safe space and that he is comfortable there. It is a little controversial to use the crate for punishment since it could make Rocky anxious when he needs to be confined in the crate for other reasons, but if he goes in voluntarily it's a good sign that he doesn't have a negative association with his crate.
