How to help a dog from a bonded pair with separation anxiety?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Shepherd | Male | neutered

I'm taking home a dog that was part of a bonded pair, are there any behavioural issues I should expect or ways to help him settle in? He's definitely the more confident of the two, but is still very close with his sister and gets a little bit worried when they're apart.

If he was part of a bonded pair then he definitely may experience some anxiety with being separated. He may have a decreased appetite or you may notice some behavioral issues. You could try an Adaptil collar or Solliquin and see if that helps him. Good luck. I hope he gets used to his new environment quickly. http://www.solliquin.com/

It is always a little difficult to seperate a bonded pair. But with a consistent routine including lots of exercise, basic training with lots of positive reinforcement to build confidence, and time he will adapt to his new home. when you first bring him home he will understandably be a little anxious. He may be particular nervous if you leave him alone. Try to bring him home at a time you can spend lots of time with him, Keep your home fairly calm, take him out for walks if he has nervous energy, socialize him with your friend's dogs (if he enjoys that companionship and feels comfortable around dogs other than his current bonded friend ). If he is comfortable in a kennel you can place him in kennel when you do have to leave him. With a little time and patience most dogs adapt very well!
