My dog has a bleeding, puss-filled lump on his back. Is he sick?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Male | unneutered | 5 months and 21 days old | 50 lbs

About a month ago, my red-nose pit bull of a year and a half had a peace of something on his lower back above his tail that was bloody and seemed to go away after 2 days but he grew something in that exact spot and it's round, red(skin like), bleeding and has puss. I can't help to think it's something serious I can tell it bothers him he's always licking it and he's pooping a lot more than usual and his poop is watery and he's not eating much which is very unlike him. Please help!

It could be an infection, cyst, or possibly a hystiocytoma. The best thing would be to have a vet take a look at the lesion. Your vet can do a needle aspirate to help diagnose and then determine the best way to treat. He may need an antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, or it may need to be removed. Hope he feels better soon!

If she has a lump that is weeping on her back than it could be an infection or a cyst. The best thing would be to have your vet take a look at the lesion to determine the cause. She may need an antibiotic or anti-inflammatory to help treat the problem.
