My dog's eye was injured, now looks better. Does he still need a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | unneutered | 8 years and 3 months old | 120 lbs

I have a question. My dog was inside our fenced in gate. Something got a hold of him and not sure what it could have been. That was this past Wednesday. I have been cleaning his wound twice a day since and it appears to be better. My question is do you think its best to take him to the Vet to receive antibiotics if needed? His whole right eye was closed Wednesday. This is a pic of it this morning.

That is likely to be due to a moderate to severe conjunctivitis, probably secondary to a trauma or infection. A check up would be needed as appropriate treatment would include antibiotics and anti-inflammatory eye drops. Corneal injuries must be ruled out as well. Please do not hesitate to contact us again on the forum or by requesting a consultation if you have any more questions or to discuss it any further.
