My senior cat is skinny but active. How can I help him gain weight?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 15 years and 1 month old | 7 lbs

My 15 year old cat is very skinny but otherwise very healthy and active. My vet isn't concerned about his weight but I am, when he was younger he weighed 12 lbs, now he's 7 lbs, his tail circumference has shrunk dramatically and I can feel his spine when I pet him. Can I add anything to his diet to increase his weight?

Yikes! Depending on how rapidly Hobbes has been loosing weight, that's could be very concerning. I would focus on trying to figure out why his weight is down so much. At a minimum, he needs some blood work that checks his kidney values, thyroid level, and urine. If your vet has already done all of that, ask if they would refer to somewhat to have a full abdominal ultrasound. I'm worried about hyperthyroidism, kidney disease, or even cancer for Hobbes.
