My 3-month-old puppy just threw up bright red blood. What do I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Siberian Husky | Male | 20 lbs

rescued a puppy3mth yesterday from someone who couldn't take care of him. He has been fine acting since we brought him home. Stools seem normal. But it looked like he just threw up bright red blood. What should I do? We h have kids he may have eaten something like a piece of crayon or chalk. I stopped him chewing on orange chalk. He may have found a small piece of red chalk. Person who gave us him was giving table food and different dog foods. I chose a dog food last night for him, he ate some.

Hello. So sorry that Pippin may be having an issue and I apologize that no one answered your question sooner. In the future if you need an immediate answer please ask a priority question or ask for a one on one consult with one of our experts so you can get a quick answer. It has been a few days now so I hope Pippin is doing well. It sure looks like blood that he vomited. I would have recommended a vet visit as that can sure be serious. He could have parasites, a stomach ulcer or any number of other issues. If he is back to normal that is great. If not, then I strongly recommend you take him to the vet for a visit. In the meantime, a bland diet like boiled chicken and rice would be nice to feed time as it would be easily digestible if he stomach is compromised in any way. I hope this helps. Best wishes. Dr. Amber

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Riley Ann. I recommend that she a veterinarian today. Vomiting blood is potentially a very serious sign. I am glad that she is still acting normal, but the vomit is worrisome. She will be evaluated. Her veterinarian may recommend fecal testing, bloodwork and possibly x-rays of her belly. I hope this information helps!
