Why is my senior pitbull passing black tarry stool? Is it serious?

My 12 year old pitbull is popping black tar like blood. ALOT of it he still has a appetite still responds to affection. He also has very bag skin allergies, arthritis and hip dysplasia. What can I do for him. I'm scared if I take him to the vet they will suffer to put him down. Pet's info: Dog | Pit Bull Terrier | Male | unneutered | 11 years and 11 months old | 50 lbs
