Why is my kitten biting its bald, swollen tail and not healing?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 4 months and 20 days old | 5 lbs

My 5 month old kitten has deleloped a bald, slightly swollen tip of tail. He had a week on antibiotics and it hasn't improved and had a scab on skin slightly below the bald patch. He went back and had an antibiotic injection and I just looked at it now and he has bitten the bald tip and there are 5 more scabs around the first scab. We will try and get into the vets in the morning. She took a scrapping but is puzzled by what it could be?

Hello. So sorry Domino is having this issue. It looks like an injury and it may not be resolving because he keeps bothering it (biting and chewing at it). If he is not wearing an Ecollar (cone) then that probably needs to happen. It will not heal no matter what it is being treated with as long as he keeps bothering it. If it continues to not heal because the blood supply to it is compromised that part of the tail may need to be amputated. Sorry for the bad news. I would definitely take him back to the vet for a recheck and see what they say but I would think an amputation may be needed. I hope this helps. Best of luck to you and Domino. Dr. Amber
