Breeder's vet says 8-week-old puppy blood test is too much blood?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Schnauzer | Female | unspayed | 1 month and 11 days old

Hi I am buying a standard Schnauzer for my mother her last dog a miniature schnauzer died at 3 yrs from a kidney problem. I have asked breeder to do a full panel blood test to check liver, kidney, pancreas and thyroid. I would pay for these test. The breeder talked to his vet and she said she wouldn't recommend it in an 8 week old pup because it is too much blood to draw. This does not sound right to me.

That doesn't sound right to me either. I'm wondering if you heard that reported back from the breeder as "the vet said," and you didn't hear that directly from the vet themselves. It truly isn't a lot of blood to draw to check the organ functions, and I would honestly be suspicious about that answer. I would recommend asking the breeder for the name of the vet so you can speak to them yourselves. If the breeder refuses to give you the vet's name or permission to speak to the vet, then you know there is something dodgy going on there and I would not buy this puppy from the breeder.
