My cat ate sardines. Can they cause serious neurological issues?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed

I gave our cat some sardines in sunflower oil, she ate a bit then turned her nose up, she has since been really lethargic and has been sick a few times, we took her to the vets who have done bloods and put her on fluids, she has now lost use of her left back leg and front leg, the vet says the bloods are normal but they think she may have either had a stroke or have a brain tumour. Could the sardines in sunflower oil be a reason for this?

I am so very sorry to hear about Caddy. I am glad she is under veterinary care. I do not think the sardines in sunflower oil are related to her issue, I think it is just a coincidence that she started having problems around the same time as the sardines. The sardines could potentially cause GI upset or pancreatitis if she had a very sensitive stomach, but would not cause neurological issues.
