Why did my guinea pig die suddenly after recovering from pneumonia?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My 2 year old guinea pig was losing weight and he was scratching so much that he started to bleed. I took him to the vet and they diagnosed it as pneumonia and gave me medicine for him. He got a little bit better then a couple months ago I checked on him and he was squeaking quietly. I noticed that his water was full and he usually drank over half of it in a day and he didn't touch his food. Later I checked on him and he sadly had passed away. What could have caused this? I am very confused.

I am so sorry to hear that you lost Snickers. It is difficult to know what might have caused his death without performing a necropsy (an autopsy for animals). It may have been a recurrence of the pneumonia or he may have developed some other kind of infection such as a gastrointestinal infection. Either way, it sounds like you took good care of him for the duration of his life.
