My bird died from liver failure. Could an infection be the cause?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Unknown - Bird | Female | unspayed | 2 years and 4 months old | 139 lbs

We have had a dusky lory pass following a 5 day stint in an avian hospital - he was said to be doing very well during this time. He had a clostridium infection, and was put onto Clavulox, but this did not occur for around 9 hours. He responded well to the medication, and perked up, but the post-mortem suggests that he eventually succumbed to liver failure - multiple necrotic lesions in the liver in the post mortem. Could this organism have done damage to the liver in this short period?

It's possible, but would be hard to tell even with necropsy. It's possible that Arbi may have had another underlying issue causing the liver damage, or had something congenital that just wasn't noticed until he was ill with something else. Discussing the necropsy results with the pathologist that performed it or your vet that treated Arbi is best as they will have a clearer picture of what went on along with his previous medical history.
