Why is there a lump on my cat's neck after tick removal with oil?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 16 years old | 7 lbs

I removed a tick using oil from my xats neck. It could not have been there 24 hours as I check daily... even though they do not go outside! It was roughly the size of a pea. It released with the oil and I could see the head..... its "feelers" were moving. I applied alcohol to area... but now has small lump... appx half pea size at site. No pain when I touch it. What is this and how do I treat? Thank You

This lump is likely a local inflammatory response that is sort of like an allergic reaciton. As long as it doesn't spread, becomes painful or causes a fever then I wouldn't be too concerned about it. Apply topical Neosporin if you wish twice a day until healed. Ticks take more than 48 hrs of attachment or transmit disease.
