My dog keeps vomiting blood and can't keep water down. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Poodle | Female | spayed | 10 lbs

Dog has thrown up 16 in the past two to three hours, can't keep water down for more than 5 minutes. It looks like coffee grounds which I believe is digested blood. She also threw up a small amount of red blood. She's also very thirsty.

Oh poor lady!! You need to get her to an emergency vet asap. That much vomiting with blood is very concerning and she needs to be evaluated soon to figure out what is causing these signs and to institute treatment right way. The vet will likely do x-ray and blood work and give her fluids for hydration and medications to soothe her stomach and to stop the vomiting. Causes of this much vomiting can include inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis), stomach ulcers from medications or toxin and foreign bodies stuck in the stomach or bowel. I hope lady is feeling much better soon.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I am sorry to hear Heavenly isn’t feeling well. I recommend you take her to a vet right away for an exam and possible xrays or bloodwork. If she can’t keep anything down I would be worried about an intestinal foreign body or other disease process. That much vomiting can lead to dehydration very quickly. If nothing is found they can get her medications to stop the vomiting and get her feeling better. Good luck and kisses to Heavenly!
