Is it safe to give my 55.5 lb dog the larger flea treatment dose?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Cattle Dog | Female | 55.5 lbs

I have two flea treatments one for dogs 20-55lbs and one for dogs over 55lbs. My dog weighs 55.5 lbs. Can I give them the bigger dosage without harming them?

In most cases, administering the larger dose would be recommended. The one caveat is that some cattle breeds are sensitive to invermectin. If the medication contains invermectin and Addie happens to be a dog with a sensitivity it could result in neurologic symptoms such as seizures. If the medication does not contain invermectin, it should be fine to administer the flea medication for dogs over 55.5lbs.
