My senior dog has seizures & bad teeth. Is dental anesthesia safe?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pit Bull Terrier | Female | spayed | 12 years and 3 months old

My dog is a female aged 12 cross pitbull/staffie. She started having seizures over 2 years ago. I have been treating her with natural medicines & change of diet.. she had an incident on Monday having gone for 7 months without one. Not sure what triggers it. I'm concerned with her teeth as some r bad & broken & dont want this to cause health problems. When I asked the get said risky to give anaesthetic&so what do I do as not much advise given other than he said just leave it. Im from South Africa

If your vet is not comfortable with performing anesthesia on your pet, ask for a referral to a veterinary neurologist. Jodie may need to start medication for her seizures if they are becoming more frequent, and the neurologist can help you with that and also help discuss risk vs benefit for a dental. Denta disease and broken teeth are extremely painful, and should be addressed if the neurologist thinks it is safe. A veterinary anesthesiologist can also be recommended to perform the anesthesia during the dental if needed. In the meantime, keep a seizure log to monitor what is happening, and if Jodie has a seizure lasting more than 5 minutes take her to the emergency hospital, as this can be dangerous.
