What causes a dog to itch one spot so much they can't even move?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Female | 8 years old | 11 lbs

My dog keeps itching at this one spot. There are no signs of fleas I even got her flea medicine. Today as she was scratching this one spot I was calling her to come to me and she couldnt even get out of her bed to come to me. Do you have any idea of what is going on?

This presentation could be due to a trauma or localised spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria and commonly called hot spot). A check up, appropriate disinfection and antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection can eventually be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid licking.
