My Golden Retriever's leg pain is worsening. What's next for arthritis?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Male | neutered | 9 years old | 90 lbs

My 9 year old golden retriever can't bear weight on his left rear leg. He has been on pain meds and anti-inflammatory for a week but ha gotten worse. Exam by vet showed no injury and she suggested it could be arthritis in his spine. What do we do next as the condition is getting worse?

The next step will be to have several x-ray done to evaluate potential injuries and conditions in the spine, hips and knees. i would recommend asking your vet to send the xrays to a radiology specialist for second opinion as well. according to the result your vet will need to explain a treatment plan, it might be medications or surgery.
