Why is my dog's ear turning dark and losing fur after a bite?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 4 years and 11 months old | 65 lbs

My dog got bit on the ear by another dog. Now where he got bit, the skin is turning dark in color and the fur is falling out. Any ideas on what is wrong?

That could be a consequence of the bite (scar tissue) or potentially the site is getting infected. Bacterial and fungal infection can cause that presentation. I would recommend to monitor it, and if not resolving, a check up, appropriate disinfection and eventually antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection can eventually be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid scratching if any.
