Why is my dog's poop still soft weeks after neutering and antibiotics?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shiba Inu | Male | neutered | 6 months and 21 days old | 22 lbs

He neutered about 4 weeks ago and was on antibiotics for 2 of those weeks. He experienced diarrhea almost every day after antibiotics ended despite eating his regular food. We thought he had worms and gave him dewormer and his poop firmed up for a few days. 3 days ago he over ate new treats and his normal food and threw up all night. We fed him plain rice and pumpkin and he eats/acts normally; however, his poop is still so soft so today so he was fed his regular food. Will his poop be normal?

Some antibiotics can cause gastrointestinal upset. I would have expected that to resolve once the antibiotics were discontinued. Since he has vomited and continues to have a soft stool, you may need to have a fecal samples checked and obtain abdominal x-rays to rule out a foreign body.
