Is my small dog at risk giving birth to large puppies? C-section?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 40 lbs

Hi there, my dog Riley was accidentally bred on her first heat by a pit pull cross. My dog Elvis. He was neatured but sperm can still survive after being snipped and he got what he wanted. Riley however is a whippet cross (I think terrier) and is rather boney as the breed. Is she going to be ok with giving birth with pitcross puppies? Or am I going to need to call a vet for a c-section?? She is due around July

Pregnancy complications really depend on how large the puppies are and how many she is carrying. It is best to work with your vet for regular checkups to confirm the pregnancy, and an X-ray as it gets closer to Riley's due-date to check on the size and number of puppies. Your vet can then recommend if a C-section is needed. Signs to watch out for during labor that may indicate dystocia (difficulty giving birth) include straining for long periods without success, a visible puppy stuck in the birth canal, or no puppies produced after several hours of labor. These are all signs something may be wrong and that Riley should be brought to the vet for care.
