Why does my semi-feral cat have hair loss and scabs on legs and feet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 8 lbs

I"ve noticed patches of hair loss with scabs on both front legs (by the feet) of one of the semi-feral cats in my care. I can see tiny scabs starting on her rear toes and feet as well. Has a good diet: Iams hairball control, and receives a brewer's yeast tablet every other day. Ideas? I haven't a current cell phone, so can't send a photo.

Without seeing any photos my best guess on a feral (semi-feral) cat would be fleas or a flea allergy or some type of bacterial infection. I highly doubt it is related to diet. I would recommend you apply a topical flea treatment and see if that resolves the issue first. If not, then if she will allow you bathe her then I would suggest trying a medicated shampoo that contains Chlorhexidine. If all else fails then she may need to see a vet for an antibiotic shot and/or some testing as I guess it could be possible that she has ringworm. It is really hard for me to say even if I did have photos. I hope this helps. Best of luck to you and Goldy :) Dr. Amber
