My dog has a hard, bone-like bump near his anus. Is it anal glands?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Doberman Pinscher | Male | unneutered | 5 months and 15 days old | 20 lbs

My dog has a bump near its anus. When I touch it, it feels like a bone. I've been looking around and it seems that maybe it could have something to do with his anal glands. I took him to the vet to make sure and he told me it was nothing that he had probably hit himself. Is it possible for him to have hit himself with something and for it to have swollen up and gotten as hard as a bone?

Hello! If it was an injury, I would think it would be starting to improve with time. If it doesn't seem to be improving, it could be, like you said, an anal gland issue, or even a tumour of some kind. I would suggest you have him checked again, especially if it has been some time (ie 24-48 hours) after your initial visit. Your vet is probably assuming that if it isn't getting better, you will call and let them know. Best of luck with Turbo!
