Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | unspayed | 4 years and 6 months old | 30 lbs
I have an outside dog named Jasmine. For some reason, she keeps chewing at her back and causing the hair to fall off and her skin to scab. This happens about every 2 months, then will go back to normal in a bout 2 weeks. We thought she was allergic to salmon because it first happened after eating that, but it's still happening with a salmon-free diet. She doesn't have fleas. I don't know what else to do? Any suggestions?

It could be an environmental allergen causing Jasmine to scratch in that particular spot, unseen parasites, or an issue with the anal glands or rectum that she can't reach so she is chewing on her back instead. Having the area checked out by your vet may give you some answers as to what is causing it as well as seeing if it needs any additional treatment such as medicated shampoo or antibiotics. You can also try using an old T-shirt to cover the area or an Elizabethan (cone) collar to help break the chewing and allow the area to heal fully. Using a pet or baby wipe when she comes indoors to wipe down the fur in that area may also help remove any irritating allergens if that is the cause.
