Why is my dog licking her paw after a walk with no visible injury?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 5 years and 3 months old | 23 lbs

After taking a walk on a nearby forest trail, my dog has been constantly biting and licking her paw. I have already checked to see if she cut herself or got a sticker or something but all seems normal. She isn't limping but when I touched her paw, she was quick to jerk away. What can I do?

Place an e-collar on Darby to prevent further kicking and chewing. An Epsom salt foot soak may provide relief from whatever is bothering her. Restrict activity to just leash walks for elimination. Monitor for worsening lameness/sensitivity, swelling, bruising or bleeding. See your veterinarian for an exam if symptoms persist.
