My mama budgie stopped feeding 26-day-old babies. Is this normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Unknown - Bird | Female

Mama budgie has suddenly stopped feeding her babies. She just goes in there and moves around. Papa budgie feeds the babies now. The babies are around 26 days old. I have noticed this for a week now. Handfeeding formula is not avilable here. Please help. Thanks.

26 days is old enough that the babies should be starting to explore and eat some on their own. If only dad is feeding them he may be trying to encourage them to leave the nest and find food on their own. Making sure they have access to bird feed near where they can get to may help get them used to eating on their own and exploring some.

This is perfectly normal and the babies will begin to eat more on their own and explore outside the nest as they continue to grow. The mother is likely trying to encourage them to do so as they get older and need less care from her.
