Cystic ovarian disease in cattle, dairy cattle in particular, will usually lead to an inability to become pregnant until resolved. The cysts on the ovaries lead to the product of hormones and chemicals that make it impossible to enter heat or carry out a pregnancy to term usually. There are two main ways that these can be treated. The most common method is with the administration of a GnRH (gonadotropin releasing hormone) drug. This will cause the release of LH (lutenizing hormone) and should ultimately result in the degradation of the cysts. Another method, much less utilized today, is manual rupture of the cysts. While this can be verified by touch by an experienced person, there is a risk of hemorrhage with this method.
