Why is my dog's fur clumping or pilling on his back and legs?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 4 years and 6 months old | 50 lbs

My 7 year old boxador has areas of fur on his upper hind legs/lower back that look like the fur is separate from the rest. Kind of like when a feather is coming out of a feather pillow or jacket except that it is still attached. I don't know how else to describe it and can't find a picture of it on-line.

You can include pictures on the forum here, so if you want to include them you can ask another question or schedule a consultation with one of our experts. Without seeing it it would be hard to tell what it is, but it's possible it could be a tuft of shedding hair (they can sometimes pill and come out in a tuft). Brushing the area will usually help clear that up. if you're seeing any redness, itching or bald patches in the area then it could indicate something such as an allergy, parasite or infection of the affected area.
