My dog in heat has a ball-like lump from her vagina. Is it normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 8 months and 5 days old | 40 lbs

My dog has been on her period for about two weeks now , we just went to check if she was still bleeding and she laid on her back , and a ball type thing coming out of her vagina . She doesn't seem in pain and she's not lethargic.

This is uite common and s due to swelling of the tissue under hormonal influences. If it remains small and not exposed to trauma/drying out it should resolve as the heat ends; neutering is recommended as this is likely to get bigger with each heat cycle and makes both breeding and labor/delivery both difficult and risky

While this doesn't look totally normal it does look like the swelling is near a superficial blood vessel and it may not be harmful. If the area starts to seem firm again, if it seems hot or painful, if it increasing in size, or if it is not resolving once Indi goes out of heat I'd recommend having a vet take a look.

There are several possibilities.but I assume It could be a vaginal prolapse, or even a bladder prolapse. If it only happens during her heat cycle then it is likely hormonally responsive. If it becomes difficult for her to urinate or if it prolapses any more dramatically then she really should be seen immediately. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.
