My cat refuses Hill's y/d thyroid food. Can I add broth or other things?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 17 years and 1 month old | 10 lbs

Our cat just started Hill y/d thyroid care dry cat food and is not taking to it. Is there something we can add to it to get him to eat it. We know this is his only food going forward but is it ok to add chicken broth or something to it?

You can add some chicken broth to it, but it's important to make sure that it is low sodium and does not contain any garlic or onion powder. Hill's also have a thyroid care wet food, and you can mix that in with the dry food to tempt Patches to eat it. I hope this helps :-)

Unfortunately, this is a problem many kitty owners face with this diet. Hills (the company that makes y/d) has done trials with Swanson's low sodium chicken broth and suggest trying this if palatibility is an issue. Good luck!! If this does not work remember there are medications you can give or you could consider the radioactive iodine therapy.
