My dog drank a lot of water after running. Is she at risk for bloat?

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | unspayed | 4 years and 10 months old | 80 lbs

I let my dog drink a lot of water after she ran today (played fetch). I forgot that it's bad to let them drink after running, what's the chance that she's going to get bloat now? I made her lay down right away

There are actually no studies that cite drinking water after exercise as a cause of bloat. Star's chances of developing bloat at this point are unchanged. There are a lot of unknowns regarding the exact causation of bloat in dogs and research is ongoing. Don't worry! :-)

    Bloat is definitely a concern with deep chested dogs like German Shepherds but hopefully Star will be fine. I would keep an eye on her. Bloat is more commonly associated with dogs eating quickly and then exercising or drinking a lot of water after a meal. I would withhold food for a little while. Signs of bloat include restlessness, pain, retching, and a distended abdomen. If you suspect that Star is bloating, please contact your vet immediately.

    I can understand being worried about Gus and potentially bloat, and good on you for reaching out for help! When a dog has bloat, they will be restless, anxious, will pace a lot, will have abdominal pain, and spend time looking at their stomach. You are right that bloat may be a concern when a dog drinks a lot of water, but based on the symptoms you have described, I would not be thinking he has bloat. Monitor him for the signs I mentioned above, and if you see any of them, take Gus into a vet immediately. Otherwise after long walks, I would offer him small amounts of water at a time to keep him drinking it too quickly. I hope this helps!

How much water can a dog drink right after eating? My dog has about 1 cup of dry food in the morning and 1 cup of dry in the afternoon. I think she probably drank atleast a cup after eating. Is that too much? Would that cause bloat?
This amount of water does not seem abnormal. The best thing that you can do to prevent bloat aside from feeding two smaller meals a day, which you are already doing, is to avoid heavy exercise for two hours after meal time. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

Hi! I just brought my dog for a mile walk and when we got home he drank Half a bowl of water very quickly. He's a 14 year old English setter, hes lying on his bed now and licking his legs, I'm just afraid of bloat.

I took my dog for a very light walk after I fed her (10 minutes after we only walked for maybe a block she needed to bathroom and our yard is being re done) its been 2 hours and she seems okay but I'm concerned about bloat I read you're not supposed
Hi and thanks for using Boop by Petco! A light walk probably won't hurt but yes you are right about Bloat. It's very serious and any exercise after eating can be a problem. But it's usually vigorous activity like running, playing, fetching. Light walks should not be a problem and I don't see that as a big risk factor. Lots of owners do the same thing that you did. Also don't let her drink a big bowl of water around the time of vigorous activity. Small sips are ok but not huge gulps of water. So it's good to be careful and vigilant. The signs of Bloat include dry heaves (trying to vomit but nothing comes up), restlessness, not able to get comfortable, crying or moaning in discomfort, pacing, not wanting to lay down. I think you did the right thing walking her and I like the fact that you are aware of Bloat. Good job educating yourself on this important topic.

I accidentally exercised my dog for about 10 minutes not knowing she had eaten 20 minutes before. If this is the first time will she get bloat?!
Even if it's the first time, there is always the chance she could get bloated. I would monitor her for the signs of bloat, such as a swollen abdomen, looking at the abdomen, labored breathing, excessive drooling, vomiting, and paleness of the nose and mouth. If you see any of those signs, you need to take Hope into your vet immediately.

Hi there. If they drank a lot of water at one time, it's certainly possible that their stomachs might be slightly larger for a short time. As long as they are acting normal, this shouldn't be anything to worry about. Signs of "bloat" (gastric dilatation and volvulus, or GDV) include repeated attempts to vomit, pacing and panting, acting restless or uncomfortable, pale gums, and weakness or collapse. If your dogs are showing these symptoms, then you need to take them to a vet right away. But if they're acting normal and you just feel that their stomachs look a bit larger after drinking water, this is not bloat and is nothing to be concerned about.

My puppy drank a lot of water and I worry about bloat. She drank it over 45 minutes ago and she’s not showing sings. She’s sleeping comfortably and stomach is soft to touch and she’s doesn’t react when I press on her tummy. I’ll be going to bed soon
Thanks for using Boop by Petco! Some notes about bloat: -most common in Great Danes, standard poodles, mastiffs, and mixes of these breeds. Very rare in small breed dogs. - while eating and drinking large amounts of water can pre-dispose, it is only one factor of many. I don’t know if there is research about the timing but in my experience in emergency practice it’s usually within an hour of eating/drinking. - dogs with bloat will vomit (or attempt to vomit) REPEATEDLY and will stand uncomfortably or pace - they will not sleep or rest comfortably Keeping all the above in mind, if Maple is sleeping happily, you have nothing to worry about! Get some rest! PS- since Maple is female, talk to your vet about doing a prophylactic (preventative) gastropexy during her spay if you are choosing to spay. No this wouldn't cause bloat. Bloat honestly is a spontaneous flipping of the stomach that happens randomly and typically occurs in large breed deep chested dogs such as Great Danes. It often occurs after running or excessive play. And it causes your pet to not be able to stand (lateral recumbency), excessive panting, excessive vomiting, and labored breathing, so if Kita is acting normal then she is fine. Symptoms of bloat usually appear within 2 hours of eating, however they can appear as long as 24 hours later in very rare situations. As long as you keep them quiet from this point on, I doubt that you're going to have any problems. There are a lot of things we don't understand about bloat, but certainly a full stomach followed quickly by rambunctious play seems to predispose them. Keep them quiet for the rest of the evening, watch for excessive stretching, the inability to get comfortable, and for sure trying to vomit without bringing anything up. I think it's very likely that everything will be fine.

I have a question. My dog when she drinks water and I don't monitor the amount she drinks. She ends up throwing it up after. Is it something I should worry about ? I'm worried about leaving her alone one day on her own with water.
Thank you very much for your question. Because she is a deep chested dog, we do worry about bloating or other gastrointestinal stomach disease when there is an alteration in drinking or eating. You can fix the airbag problem by doing a few different things. First, you can elevate all of your water bowls so that she may not vomit as often. Second, you can give her a watering system that is constantly moving water that mimics a sink. These are available on many of the commercial retail online sites. Lastly, you can give her 1/4 or half of the amount of water that you normally give her when you are there. By this I mean you won’t give half of the normal water she drinks. But only give half if she is in a shaded, cool, or inside air-conditioned place. If she continues to vomit her water or food often, you can ask your veterinarian to put you on a daily anti-vomiting medication. Thanks a lot for your question. I hope I have helped.

My dog becomes very playful after eating food. But I read somewhere that extreme activeness after eating can lead to bloating in dogs. Is that true? What should I do?
Yes with large breed dogs that eat a large meal and run around afterwards they think that does contributes to bloat which can quickly become life threatening. I would confine your dog while eating in the house for a half hour or so, or take him for a leash walk after eating so he gets rid of some energy in a controlled fashion.
