How to keep my dog safe from worms on a property with horse manure?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Doberman Pinscher | Female | spayed | 60 lbs

I'm buying a previous horse property that has left over manure on the fields. What risk is there and what can be done to prevent my dog from picking up parasites/worms from these fields. Will simply picking up the manure suffice or are eggs left in soil.

Great question! There is always a risk of dogs getting intestinal worms from the ground. Picking up the feces will help, but eggs do live in the soil. The best thing to do is make sure Ginger is up to date on her deworming treatments. I recommend Panacur, it's a three day course of treatment that is available OTC. Deworm her now, again two weeks after the first course ends, and then every three months thereafter. I hope this helps! :-)
