Why did my dog's skin and fur improve on homemade food vs. kibble?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Toy Poodle | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 2 months old | 5.1 lbs

Hi but to be honest, my dog has some skin problems like freckles etc when she was having dog food. She got so much better after we changed to home cook food. Her skin was better. And her fur too. So what's the explanation? Dog food or homecook food is truly the better? Im curious.

Home cooked food isn't always necessarily better because unfortunately it can be deficiency in some vitamins/minerals. It is possible your dog has a food allergy and the food you are now cooking doesn't have the allergenic ingredients. You might look at the label of the food he was eating and compare it to the Ingredients you are using to see what may be in the commercial food (corn, chicken, beef, soy, etc) that you aren't using. If you like to cook for your dog I would recommend consulting your vet to determine the best homemade diet for him. There is also a good website called Balanceit.com that can help you and your vet be sure the food is properly balanced for your dog!
