My dog has a red bite-like mark. Should I wait to see the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Male | unneutered | 8 lbs

My dog has what seems like a bite mark. Its the size of a dime maybe a little bigger the outline is a brighter red. And in the middle there is a red dot. Its hardly swollen at all. Im just concerned if it will be alroght ro wait until tommorow to take him to a vet.

I see that this question was posted 1 day ago, but can't see the exact time, so it's possible you've already been to the vet! In general for skin issues, if it's not actively bleeding, not causing intense pain, and not rapidly worsening, and not accompanied by other issues (such as vomiting, extreme lethargy), then it can wait until the next day for evaluation. I hope you and Leo have gotten all sorted out!

This looks as if it could be an insect bite, such as a biting fly. If your dog has no other areas of skin that look bruised, her gums look nice and pink with no bruising, and she has normal appetite/energy then I would just monitor the spot. If it isn't resolving in a few days or other abnormalities develop then a vet exam is needed.
