My cat's benign cyst burst. Does she need surgery for the open wound?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 8 lbs

kitty had lump on side of body, needle aspirate came back benign. Started out tiny but grew to size of large marble. vet said it was probably made out of keratin because hard. The lump now gone & in its place a dime sized open wound. kitty happy and comfy and on clavamox - but will she need surgery to remove deflated cyst plus a margin for biopsy? Is there anything to remove still?

I can't tell you for sure without seeing your kitty, but from what you describe I think there is a good chance it will heal on its own without further intervention. It must have been a cyst all along and finally ruptured. Sometimes I go in later and surgically remove these only if they become a recurrent problem that is not well-managed with antibiotics alone.

You may not be able to without help. Ruptured cysts can be at risk for infection. The tissue may also have abnormal vasculature which delays or impedes healing. You can protect it from further injury by making Nugget wear an elizabethan collar at all times and keeping it clean and dry. I recommend to have Nugget examined by the veterinarian today. He may get an antibiotic. Depending on the size, some of these cats will get a special salve to encourage tissue healing. Best of luck.
