Is my Pomeranian's 30 breaths per minute while sleeping normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pomeranian | Male | unneutered | 11 months and 16 days old | 6 lbs

Does pomeranian have higher breathing rate than other big dogs? Because I checked my dog while he was about to sleep, and he seems to be breathing 30 (maybe higher) breathe per 1 minute. Is it normal?

Small dogs typically have a higher respiration rate than larger dogs. Average is 18-34 breaths per minute. 30 is within the normal range but if this seems very unusual for Teddy, it cannot hurt to have him assessed by a veterinarian.

Hello there, I am sorry to hear about your worries about your dog Teddy! Small toy breed dogs can have higher breathing rates and heart rates than larger dogs. 30 breaths per minute is on the upper end of the normal range. If your dog is breathing 35 or 40 breaths per minute or higher when he is sleeping, I would bring him in for an exam at your vet to be safe, or if he has any difficulty breathing, or coughing, or seems to tire easily during exercise an exam at your vet is warranted.
