Vetasan stains my dog's wound. Can I use triple antibiotic instead?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 1 year and 10 months old | 30 lbs

My vet gave me vetasan (?) ointment for my dog's wound, but it is dark brown and is staining everything. Is triple antibiotic ointment an acceptable substitute? She is wearing a cone so she wouldn't be able to lick it off and she is on oral temaril as well.

Vetasan is just a chlorhexidine solution. Chlorhexidine scrub and solution can be obtained in several different formulations at most pharmacies over the counter. Depending on the nature of the lesion, triple antibiotic might also be effective as well and could be worth a try. Regardless of which formulation you intend to use, I would keep the cone in place to prevent continued damage to the affected area.

Vetasan is a chlorhexidine solution. Several different formulations of this are available in other looks and colors OTC at many pharmacies. Depending on the nature of the lesion, triple antibiotic could be just as effective. Regardless of the topical you plan to use, I would recommend leaving the collar in place to prevent continued irritation of the affected area during the healing process.
